Resolution would link sites to tourism network

January 05, 2006|by TIFFANY ARNOLD

SMITHSBURG - The Mayor and Town Council approved a resolution Tuesday that would link the town's historic Civil War sites to a statewide tourism network.

The resolution was adopted by four of five council members during their normal monthly meeting. Councilman Tom Smith was unable to attend the meeting.

The Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area, an organization that has been planning for the 150-year anniversary of the Civil War, hopes to include parts of Washington, Frederick and Carroll counties, along with Smithsburg and other municipalities in the state of Maryland's System of Heritage Areas.

Historic sites "recognized" by the Maryland's System of Heritage Areas receive state money to cover up to half the cost of preparing a management plan, which is required for "certified" status.

"Certified" areas are eligible for additional funding, Goodrich said in his December presentation.

The organization hopes to receive certification, Goodrich said.
