Fleetwood is shipping Katrina trailers

January 05, 2006|by ANDREW SCHOTZ

WILLIAMSPORT - Fleetwood Travel Trailers, which has a plant in Williamsport, has been shipping thousands of trailers destined for victims of Hurricane Katrina.

A shipment went out by rail Wednesday from Hagerstown's south end.

Fleetwood spokeswoman Amy Coleman said Wednesday that the Federal Emergency Management Agency designated a contractor to buy two groups of trailers on the government's behalf. She did not know which contractor.

The first group, of 7,500 units, had to be delivered by the end of December.

The second group, of 3,100 units, is due by the end of March.

Coleman did not know how many of the 10,600 trailers would be produced at Fleetwood Travel Trailers of Maryland in Williamsport.

In October, Melinda Ford, the general manager of the Williamsport plant, estimated that 800 to 900 of the first 7,500 units would be made there.
