FFA members showcase history at mall

January 03, 2006

Future Farmers of America (FFA) senior chairman Rob Bolyard, along with other FFA members, recently researched and created a display for the Showcase of Schools for Washington County that was held at Valley Mall.

Students used old yearbooks to create their display, and were amazed at the past generations that took an active role in the FFA.

Cody Pine and Michael James, FFA advisers, thought the students did a great job. The students recognized relatives in the photographs.

"Smithsburg High School has a lot of past history in the FFA program and the community can be very proud that the program is still offered at SHS," Pine said.

FFA members who also participated along with Bolyard were Jason Gladhill, Bryce Gates, Kerri Nicley, Ernie Musser, Jeff Remsburg, Phil Schukraft, Katie Clevenger, Tim Bolyard, Nick Connelly and Kenny Melby.

These students answered questions during the display and handed out complementary coloring books and milk from Shenandoah's Pride.

Individuals who helped to set up the displays were Nick Connelly, Dan Hessong, Ashley DiMaggio, Sarah Lafferty, Justin Martin (an Old Forge Elementary School student), Jeremy Hessong, Timmy Martin and Tom Morrisey.

Homecoming parade

FFA member Tom Morrisey and FFA adviser Cody Pine worked closely with Chad Shank of Landmark Equipment LLC to participate in the Smithsburg High School Homecoming Parade.

Shank and Associates donated the John Deere 1503 tractor that pulled the FFA float, which featured various farm animals and decorations to go along with the Las Vegas theme set by the Student Government Association.

Morrisey drove the tractor, and senior Nick Connelly drove a John Deere Gator. Morrisey and FFA members Ashley DiMaggio, Jeremy Hessong, Timmy Martin and David Ridenour have completed the tractor operators course offered by Frank Allnut from the University of Maryland Extension Service.
