New Year's Eve revelry

Dancing the night away, chasing ghosts, all-night skating and bringing in the new year with prayer - everyone has their own thoughts about how best to celebrate the eve of 2006.

Fortunately there are plenty of options for New Year's Eve revelers in the Tri-State area.

Here are some of the activities that will be entertaining crowds Saturday, Dec. 31:

New Year's Eve dinner-dance

WILLIAMSPORT, Md. - Members of the Williamsport American Legion, Potomac Post 202, are hosting a dinner-dance New Year's Eve party from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Tickets cost $15 per person for members and their guests. The admission price includes a dinner of roast beef, stuffed chicken breast, potatoes, vegetables, salad and homemade desserts; hats and noisemakers; a midnight champagne toast; and continental breakfast. Spotlight's On You DJ Service will provide music, with dancing from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. There will be an open bar from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

All-night skate

HALFWAY - The Family Skating Center, southwest of Hagerstown, will hold an all-night skate New Year's Eve party. The $15 admission price includes skate rentals, party hats, noisemakers, a light show and a free pancake breakfast served after midnight. The all-night skate will last from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Tickets also are available for the New Year's Eve skate from 8 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Carillon concert

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Carillonneur Charles Farris will give a carillon concert at midnight at Mercersburg Academy. Farris will play the academy's 49-bell Henry Bucher Swoope Carillon. Concert is free. Mercersburg Academy, 300 E. Seminary St., Mercersburg. For more information, go to

Pork and sauerkraut dinner

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Joy El Ministries invites people ages 55 and older to enjoy a traditional New Year's Eve pork and sauerkraut dinner. The dinner is free

Entertainment during the event will include the Rev. Neville West demonstrating speed painting. The event will run from 1:30 p.m. to about 4 p.m. Camp Joy El, 3741 Joy El Drive.

Toast a Ghost

BERKELEY COUNTY, W.Va. - The West Virginia Society of Ghost Hunters will bring in the new year with a ghost hunt and "enormous bonfire," says Susan Crites, president of the society.

The $15 per person event will take participants to a "very actively haunted" historical farm in Berkeley County, Crites says. Starting at 9 p.m., guests will be taught how to use ghost-hunting tools and will search for the supernatural. 9 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

A midnight picnic is planned with a bonfire, champagne and picnic fixings, including hot dogs and hamburgers.

'80s clubbing

The '80s tribute band The Reagan Years, will perform at Eclipse Nite Club, north of Hagerstown. Doors open at 7 p.m., and the $30-per-person admission includes an hors d'oeuvres buffet, party favors and a midnight champagne toast.

The club is partnering with Hampton Inn Maugansville to offer reduced-price lodging and shuttle service between the club and the hotel.

People are encouraged to get tickets in advance. $30 per person in advance, $35 at the door.

Ski in the new year

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Whitetail Mountain Resort is offering a New Year's Eve party with a dinner buffet, party favors, prize giveaways and midnight fireworks. Skiing, snowboarding and tubing hours are extended to 1 a.m. Adult lift tickets from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m., including the New Year's buffet cost $67.51, and $46.32 for children ages 6 to 12.

Praise and worship

WALKERSVILLE, Md. - New Covenant of Grace Christian Ministries is holding a Watch Nite Service from 10 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. The nondenominational program will include singing, praise, worship and a sermon. The group will be led in prayer through the midnight hour. All are welcome.
