Jobless rate sees modest increase

Washington County's unemployment rate inched up slightly from 4.1 percent in October to 4.2 percent in November, as an additional 16 people were added to the county's unemployment rolls, according to data recently released by the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation.

From October to November, the number of employed workers in the county fell by 639, to 65,652. The county's civilian labor force also fell, by 623 workers, to 68,521.

Excluding statistics from December, the county's unemployment rate stands at an average of 4.4 percent for the year, according to the labor department.

Statewide unemployment increased from 3.8 percent in October to 4.1 percent in November.

The seasonally adjusted state rate of 4.2 percent stands below the national average of 5 percent.
