Correctional officer killed in accident

December 28, 2005|by Staff reports

A Maryland Correctional Training Center officer was killed while driving to work Christmas morning, a prison spokeswoman said Tuesday.

David Scott Biggs, 36, of Cumberland, Md., was a correctional officer for six years at the prison, which is south of Hagerstown, said Maj. Priscilla Doggett, spokeswoman for the Maryland Division of Correction.

Biggs was driving east on Md. 68 in Allegany County, west of Fifteen Mile Creek Road, about 6:30 a.m. when he lost control of his vehicle, said Maryland State Police Trooper 1st Class T. Shrout.

"The whole interstate there was frozen at the time," he said.

Biggs' 1999 Ford Ranger struck a guardrail and flipped, landing upside down on a median, Shrout said. Biggs was pronounced dead at the scene, and no other vehicles were involved.

"The division is saddened to lose one of our officers," Doggett said.

She said Biggs was survived by his wife, daughter, two stepchildren and parents.

Funeral services will be Thursday in Westernport, Md., she said, but she could not provide further details.
