You Said It

December 26, 2005

"This call is for the Waynesboro person calling about what political party did what in Vietnam. First of all, I am sorry that you lost a brother in that combat. I just recently lost my wife of 43 years, and I know what hurt is, especially during these holidays. All I did was correct you by proving that President Eisenhower was the first president to send military advisers into Vietnam. He sent them there in 1956, and he was president until 1961, so he had four years of sending troops there. I will not debate you any further on this subject."

"This is to the Hagerstown caller who is crying about how doctors are late sometimes in seeing you for your appointment. Well, they're doctors. Sometimes they have emergencies and have to go to the hospital to do surgeries and other things like that. They're not going to charge you a fee for being late. If you want to rag about them raking in the money, go to college and get an education. My doctor has been late a few times. I sit down and wait until he has time to take care of me. Doctors sometimes have to leave their offices to take care of someone who is in a little more need than you might be. It's Christmastime - why cry about it now? Merry Christmas."

"This is to anyone who has a loved one buried. Sometimes you may put something on your loved one's grave and think that someone stole it. Maybe they didn't steal it. Maybe the wind blew really hard and blew it out of the ground, or an animal disturbed it. I don't really think people make a habit of stealing stuff off of people's graves. Maybe there are a few, but just keep remembering your loved ones and stop worrying about somebody stealing from the grave. Weather has a lot to do with it."

"I'm calling to leave my phone number for the person who said that they would like some breakfast casserole recipes. Please call 717-794-2445 after 6 p.m."

"I'd like to know when the City Council is going to be like Pennsylvania and West Virginia and figure out a way to help poor people out instead of raising everything. The first thing I'd do is cut out the politicians in Hagerstown. The City Council is a joke. You've got to hire somebody to do a study. What are you all in office for? You want to pay somebody $50,000 or $60,000 to do a study. Then you've got people planting trees in winter on Wilson Boulevard - if that isn't a joke. You're not spending my tax money very well."

- Hagerstown

"It seems to me that the City Council cares as much about the taxpayers as this candle sitting on my table. People are getting poorer, and you people on the council don't know what you're doing, with the arguing, bickering, the childish behavior, and spend, spend, spend. It's getting to the point of being criminal. Trash pickup fees went up again. If you want the poor people out, don't price us out of the city, just say so. I can't wait until I can get out of Washington County."

"I've been teaching for 23 years, I have my master's degree, I have national board certification, and I am making nowhere near $105,000 a year. I don't where that figure came from, but it's not correct."

"We haven't had another terrorist attack since September 2001. Part of the reason is due to the fact that we've had a top secret program in place that was limited to monitoring phone conversations of those with suspected ties to terrorist groups, including al-Qaida. Now, thanks to a leak to the press, that advantage will probably be lost. I sometimes wonder if the real threat to our safety here at home isn't the New York Times and the Washington Post, who will do anything for a story, regardless of the consequences. When it comes to national security, there are some things that are on a need-to-know basis only. To those who are worrying about the government spying on us, I have one question: If you're not a terrorist, what are you worried about?"

"I lost my wallet at Robinwood on Tuesday, Dec. 21. If found, please call 301-671-2006 and leave a message. Thank you."

"I'm calling about Bush hiring the NSA to spy, looking for terrorists. He's not searching for terrorists; he's searching for people who are against his policies."

- Hagerstown

"The perfect solution to what we should call these days of December is 'Happy Holy Days.' That way you cover everybody. Enough said."

"Ethan, we hope you have a Merry Christmas and a happy first birthday. We miss you dearly, and can't understand why you're being kept away from the rest of your loving family."

"This is about the Dec. 22 comment from the person who was so concerned about the dogs that were shot by the hunters. These dogs are the same as predators, and it's perfectly legal for you to shoot them if they come onto your property. If they come onto my property, I'm going to do the same thing."
