Holiday jazz featured at Wilson College

Jazz pianist David Leonhardt has traveled the world with his music, and now he's bringing "Winter Holiday Jazz" to Wilson College in Chambersburg, Pa.

Leonhardt will perform Christmas favorites with jazz vocalist Nancy Reed on Saturday, Dec. 10. Many of the performed selections will be from the David Leonhardt Jazz Group's most recent CD, "I'll Be Home for Christmas." The duo also will perform songs from their CD "A Time for Love."

"It's very accessible jazz," says Leonhardt. "Nancy is just a wonderful singer. Anyone who is looking for a fun thing to do, I think, is going to like" the concert.

Leonhardt has been a jazz musician for more than 30 years. His first big career break was touring with Jon Hendricks as a pianist. With Hendricks, Leonhardt played across Europe, Latin America and South America.

"It was really fun," he says of his time touring with Hendricks in the 1980s. "I learned how to be on tour and to walk into a place and do a concert."

Leonhardt also has been a member of the David "Fathead" Newman Quintet. He formed his own band, the David Leonhardt Jazz Group, eight years ago, and he's accompanied jazz singers such as Dianne Reeves and Bobby McFerrin.

Nancy Reed has performed and recorded jazz with Phil Woods, Slide Hampton, David "Fathead" Newman and Bob Dorough, as well as Leonhardt.

Leonhardt and Reed have received attention for their work together, especially on their duet CD, "A Time for Love." Although Reed performs with Leonhardt's larger quintet, the simplicity of the piano and vocalist together is appealing to audiences, Leonhardt says.

"It's really intimate and it gives me a lot of space to play the piano behind her," he says.
