The Higdons

Laurence J. and Nancy M. Parrott Higdon celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Sunday, Aug. 21, 2005, at a reception at Emmanuel Baptist Temple.

The Higdons were married Aug. 27, 1955, at Grace Memorial Church in Colmar Manor, Md., by the Rev. William J. Oxenford.

Mrs. Higdon is the daughter of the late Roy N. and Hazel R. Parrott. She is a 1955 graduate of Lucy Webb Hayes School of Nursing in Washington, D.C. She worked as a nurse at Sibley Hospital, a doctor's office, a school and a camp and taught at Heritage Academy for 11 years.

Mr. Higdon is the son of Laurence S. and Cora V. Higdon. He served in the U.S. Navy Air and retired from Potomac Center and the State of Maryland in 1995.


The Higdons have two children and spouses, Dorothy and Brian Selders, and Larry and Becky Higdon.

They have seven grandchildren.

The Happels

Richard and Rosalie Happel of Waynesboro, Pa., were recently honored with a surprise 50th wedding anniversary dinner at Mountain Gate Restaurant in Waynesboro. About 100 guests attended the event which was arranged by their children, Michele Gingrich and Brian Happel. The Rev. Richard P. Fehnel, the pastor who married them, made a surprise appearance and reminisced about their wedding, which was his first as an ordained minister.

The Happels were married June 26, 1955, at Christ's United Church of Christ in Cavetown.

Mrs. Happel is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer S. Leather Jr. of Hagerstown.

Mr. Happel is the son of Richard Happel Sr. of Cascade and the late Ethel J. Happel. He retired from JLG Industries and Grove Worldwide.
