November 27, 2005|By PEPPER BALLARD

WASHINGTON COUNTY - About 50 firefighters from Clear Spring, Hancock, Maugansville and Williamsport companies and the Washington County Air and Rehab Unit responded to a fire Saturday night on Dam No. 5 Road, according to Clear Spring Ambulance Chief James Miller.

A Washington County dispatcher said the call for a fire at 11415 Dam No. 5 Road came in at 8:06 p.m. The area is about midway between Williamsport and Clear Spring.

Miller estimated the loss to the home to be $300,000.

The house is owned by Brian Hoffman, 32, who lived there with his wife and five children for the last 1 1/2 years. Nobody was home at time the fire started, he said.

"I think the house is pretty near destroyed," Hoffman said.

The house's former owner and builder, Mary Carter, of Williamsport, said the house is four years old.

It appears the fire started in the basement, Miller said.
