The Hagerstown High School Class of 1940 held its 65th anniversary reunion at Fountain Head Country Club on Sept. 18.
Name tags were given to classmates, and eyes went from face to tag. Delicious appetizers and lunch were enjoyed. Lovely floral centerpieces were the decoration for each table, and were given to committee members. Attractive maroon pens inscribed "HHS - Class of '40 65th Reunion - September 18, 2005" were given to all who attended. Classmates were entertained during lunch by the Sentimental Sounds playing their favorite songs from the 1940s, with humming and toe-tapping in the crowd.
Chairman J. Robert Hyssong conducted a memorial service for the 51 members deceased since the 60-year reunion on Sept. 23, 2000. At the time of graduation, June 5, 1940, the Class of 1940 was Hagerstown High's largest, at 358. To date, 177 classmates are known to be deceased.
All classmates were introduced and asked to make comments if desired. Out-of-area classmates attended from Baltimore, Annapolis, Arlington, Va., Cornelius, N.C., and Luguna Woods, Calif. There were numerous correspondences from classmates who were unable to attend, and they were missed.
