Mail Call from 11/25

November 26, 2005

"Pennsylvania Congressman Murtha was exactly right when he said that the troops should be coming home very soon. I know that there would be a lot of very happy troops if that were true."

- St. James

"I saw on the news that an inmate on death row in California named Tookie Williams, who killed four people in 1979 during a robbery spree, is awaiting execution within the next few weeks. Now an individual with a Ph.D. wants to nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize, because all of a sudden Williams wants to change his way of life. I guess he's scared of death. That tells me that this country has lost its edge."

- Hagerstown

"I recently had an appointment with the endoscopy center at Robinwood. I can honestly say that I have never been treated with more kindness and thoughtfulness. They were just wonderful. How blessed we are to have a facility like Robinwood. There is plenty of parking, there is consideration for senior citizens, and it's so nice and clean. We are very grateful for that facility."

"A relative in California received address labels from a group here in Hagerstown called 'Doctors Without Borders'. Has anyone out there heard of this group? There's no phone listing."

- Hagerstown

"I could be the new tourism director. I've come up with a new motto: 'Welcome to Washington County, the land of taverns, car washes, billboards, and all kinds of low-paying jobs.'"

"I'd like to know why Dick Cheney is hammering Mr. Murtha and the Democratic party, when Cheney had about five deferments."

- Boonsboro

"Now all of you who paid the $30 flush fee have some idea how we in the city feel; those of us who have no children in school and have to pay thousands in county real estate taxes each year."

- Hagerstown

"We would like to send a huge thank you to Doug McAllister for coming out on Sunday night to fix our furnace. Happy Thanksgiving to Doug and his family."

- Maugansville

"This is in regards to the Tuesday, Nov. 22 letter to the editor entitled 'West Virginia in better shape'. I'd just like to tell Mr. J.T. Davis that it seems to me that he's smarter than the County Commissioners. He ought to consider running next time. I'd think he'd be a good man. Thanks for the letter."

- Sharpsburg

"I'm calling in regards to the Tuesday, Nov. 22, paper Tri-State section. I find it utterly appalling that there is a picture there of a poor deer killed. There is blood in its mouth, and it's horrible. I can't believe that the residents here in Washington County consider hunting a tradition. "

- Huyetts

"A caller from Boonsboro referred to three terrorist attacks before 9/11, and claimed that there have been no terrorist attacks since going to war in Iraq. The three attacks you referred to that occurred before 9/11 did not happen on American soil, but Americans died or were hurt, and that is a tragedy. Americans continue to be maimed and to die from terrorist attacks every single week in Iraq."

- Hagerstown

"This is in response to the person who called from Rohrersville stating that we shouldn't denigrate the president, that biblically, he was put there by God, and that we are denigrating God. I remember that during the eight years of the Clinton administration, many Republicans - all Christians, in fact, the fundamentalists - denigrated President Clinton. For eight years, I went to a church where the pastor never prayed for the President - until George Bush got in, and then every Sunday he prayed for the President. I think that what goes around comes around."

- Hagerstown

"This is to the Boonsboro caller, about 9/11 and the Iraqi war. Remember this: Those terrorists are already in this country. They can pick the time, the place, and whatever they want to use. All they have to do is wait for the right time and place. They're here."

- Hagerstown

"A person from Pennsylvania thinks that their taxes are not as high as Maryland's. By the time they add up all of their different taxes, they are the same, if not more than Maryland taxes."

- Hagerstown

"The 'Bye-Bye, Birdie' show was the greatest."

- Williamsport

"There are two homes on Woodcrest Road in Greenberry Hills that are decorated beautifully. Everybody needs to go by and look at them. I hope you enjoy them as much as my grandchildren and I did."

- Hagerstown

"This is to the Hagerstown person who said that President Bush is proposing eliminating tax deductions for mortgage interest. As a teacher of American government, I can tell you that any of the things dealing with mortgages, interest, and economics are handled through Congress, not the President. I wish that people who talk about President Bush would recognize that everything that happens in government is not emanating from his office. It comes from the various bureaucracies that handle these affairs."

- Rohrersville
