Agriculture Outlook and Policy Conference scheduled Nov. 30

November 22, 2005

It's not too late to register for the ninth annual Agriculture Outlook and Policy Conference: "Winning Strategies for Maryland Agriculture."

Sponsored by the University of Maryland's Center for Agricultural and Natural Resource Policy, the conference will be held Nov. 30 at the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center.

The meeting will center on issues identified in surveys and listening sessions by the Maryland Agricultural Commission in preparation for the Governor's Conference next February.

These issues involve:

  • Maintenance of Maryland's agricultural land base in the face of regulations and development pressures;

  • Preservation of agricultural profitability through new marketing opportunities and the creation of value-added products; and

  • Provision of goods and services of value to Maryland agriculture by the state Department of Agriculture, the University of Maryland and others.

"Our goal for the conference is to lay out the key facts pertaining to the issues, discuss the benefits and costs of various policy options, and gather information for use in the development of formal recommendations at the Governor's Conference," said Dr. Bruce Gardner, director of the Center for Agricultural and Natural Resource Policy. Present will be a panel of experts on each issue.

Registration for the conference, which runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., is $25. For more information or to register, call 1-301-405-0057 or e-mail The conference Web site
