WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Several Washington Township residents in recent weeks have lodged objections to a move by Township Supervisors Art Cordell and Stewart McCleaf to appoint former Supervisor Paul Benchoff to replace James Kirby, who resigned from the board.

The supervisors, on a motion by board member Chris Firme, dropped the move to appoint Benchoff and agreed to accept applications for the spot from interested citizens.

Tonight, at a special meeting, the board will interview eight applicants, including Benchoff, of 302 Geiser Ave.

A decision on Kirby's replacement is expected following the interviews.

The supervisors historically have held interviews for board replacements.

About 20 residents attended a supervisors meeting earlier this month. Several voiced opposition to the move to appoint Benchoff without interviewing other applicants.

McCleaf said at the time that Benchoff would be a good choice because of his 11 years as a township supervisor.

The makeup of the board changes significantly in January when Cordell and Richard Mohn Jr., both defeated for re-election in the May primary, will be replaced by Carroll Sturm and John Gorman.

The two, along with Firme, are considered to be proponents of slower growth in a township being inundated with new residential and commercial development.

Firme, Sturm and Gorman would have a greater voice on the five-member board.

Jean Frantz, of 13820 Welty Road, told the supervisors Monday that they would be "making an important decision" regarding Kirby's replacement.

She said Cordell and McCleaf "have already gone on record as supporting Mr. Benchoff ... I am asking you to approach the interview process with an open mind ... It is a given that the leadership will be different. But I also think the speed of the rezoning and development need to be addressed. It has been too much too fast..."

The seven other applicants are:

  • Robert Correll, 11530 Greenridge Drive.

  • Shirley Grove, 11446 Eigenbrode Lane.

  • Kathy Shaffer, 5486 Iron Bridge Road.

  • Lori Frantz, 10471 Buchanan Trail East.

  • Dorsey Dick, 13524 Pennersville Road.

  • Elena M. Kehoe, 16 Eastland Circle.

  • Craig Welterlen, 1146 Weatherstone Drive.

Each will be given a 10-minute interview. The meeting will be open.
