Morgan County Commission mulls recreation center plan

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - The Morgan County Summit held last month was a success, said Audrey Morris, summit steering committee member and the director of Morgan County Starting Points.

Morris told the Morgan County Commission on Friday that the creation of a community recreation center was agreed on by all who participated in the summit.

At the summit's end, the participants suggested Morgan County Parks and Recreation head up the project, Morris said.

It also was suggested the Morgan County Commission, Morgan County Board of Education and Town of Bath officials make the recommendation to "Parks and Rec, to make the building a priority issue," Morris said.

Morris said Morgan County Parks and Recreation needs a full-time director to head up the project.

Commissioner Bob Ford agreed with Morris

"You need someone driving the issue," Ford said.

Commission President Glen Stotler said Morgan County Parks and Recreation is "the most likely entity to do this, and that is what is recommended by summit participants. Parks and Rec wants to head up this issue."

"All entities have to bring money to the table to make that happen," Stotler said.

Chris Risinger, summit steering committee member and Morgan County Boys & Girls Club director, said, "if a director is in place, the grants to do the project will go forward."

Stotler suggested the summit steering committee member meet with Morgan County Board of Education and Town of Bath officials.

"The other two entities have to be talked to" before an agreement is reached, Stotler said.
