HCC falls in pool play

November 18, 2005

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - It just wasn't Hagerstown Community College's day.

Lindsey Plotner had 17 kills, 12 digs and three blocks, but it wasn't enough as HCC's volleyball team dropped a 30-22, 30-18, 30-21 decision to host Scottsdale Community College on Thursday in the opening round of pool play at the NJCAA Division II national tournament.

"Actually, the girls didn't play well today," HCC coach Beth Domenico said. "The girls know they could have beat Scottsdale. It wasn't that they were any better. We didn't play that well."

HCC entered the tournament ranked No. 17 in Division II and seeded 10th for the tournament. The tournament was divided into four three-team round-robin pools. The Hawks were 49-2 and didn't lose a single game in the Maryland JuCo Conference this season.

Staci Grabill had 29 assists and Savanah Wetzel had 16 digs for the Hawks. Karey Tomes had seven kills and 10 digs.

HCC faces sixth-seeded Kishwaukee (Ind.) today for the right to stay alive in the tournament. If the Hawks defeat Kishwaukee, they will get a second chance against Scottsdale in a playoff to advance out of pool play and into the tournament's quarterfinals.

The semifinals and finals are scheduled for Saturday.
