First Data plans snow softball tournament

First Data Corp. in Hagerstown is planning a fundraising snow softball tournament at three sites in January, the City Council heard Tuesday.

The tournament would be at Municipal Stadium, Fairgrounds Park and City Park on Jan. 26, 27 and 28, 2006.

Scott Fessler of First Data said the goal is to raise $15,000 for the United Way of Washington County.

First Data would provide shuttle service between the three venues.

A memo describing the event says the Hagerstown Suns staff would serve alcohol at Municipal Stadium.

Junior Mason, the city's parks superintendent, said the fields wouldn't be affected if the weather was cold and snowy, but they would if the weather was warm and rainy.

First Data asked the city to waive fees for the event, but Councilman Lewis C. Metzner declined. He said the city can be a sponsor and contribute certain costs instead.

Otherwise, he said, a precedent would be created for other groups, such as the Ku Klux Klan, to also ask the city to waive fees.

Diane Baker of First Data said Metzner's suggested approach "could deter us from doing the event."

Baker said she would show the new possible arrangement to her company's legal department, which is not in Hagerstown.

Mayor Richard F. Trump assured her that the city supports First Data's effort.

In a fact sheet included in the proposal, First Data said the event would be a double-elimination tournament limited to 32 men's and co-ed teams.
