Bus catches fire on Interstate 70

November 17, 2005|by ERIN CUNNINGHAM

The rear of a Greyhound bus carrying 24 passengers and one driver caught fire just before midnight Tuesday on Interstate 70 east at the Interstate 81 bridge, according to Volunteer Fire Co. of Halfway spokesman Alan Matheny.

The rear of the bus was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived, Matheny said. The interstate was closed for about two hours while firefighters were at the scene, he said.

There were no injuries, and the fire was caused by a mechanical failure, Matheny said.

The bus was taking passengers to Washington, D.C., at the time of the fire, he said.
