"If tree leaves pollute the bay, then how does one explain how the bay and its tributaries were in pristine condition when the white man arrived on these shores? If the state could levy a graduated tax on selfishness, greed and stupidity, there would be more than enough money to clean up the bay."

"Thank you to all the veterans, past and present. Never take freedom for granted."

- Cavetown

"A caller wanted to know where they can go to pay a phone bill besides Martin's Food Market. Why waste your time and gas going anywhere? Just put a check in the return envelope that comes with your phone bill and leave it in your mailbox for the postman. How hard is that? Or easier still, pay your phone bills with automatic debit from your bank account. It's a free service and you don't have to go anywhere or do anything. Come on, people, this is the 21st century."

"Hallelujah! The proletariat has finally spoken. The radical Christian fanatical right has been defeated in New Jersey, California and Virginia. America, take back your country from the radical Christian fanatics. Vote all the radical Republicans out of office."

- Halfway

"With the gas prices going down, I don't see the praise for President Bush. When the gas prices were up, President Bush was getting bashed all over. He got blamed for everything. Now he's getting blamed for going overseas to summit meetings, and people are saying that he should stay home. President Clinton never got bashed for playing golf, so I think Bush should get some praise once in awhile."

- Boonsboro

"Talk about being almost famous - the other day, a man sold his blood to buy a bus ticket to Hagerstown to rescue an adopted dog. His brother did, too. This happened on NBC's hit TV show 'My Name is Earl.' Then the story about the stolen bull semen was on the 'Tonight' show with Jay Leno. How about that?"

- Hagerstown

"People out there complaining about the sewer bills and the flush tax and emissions inspections, when the election comes up for a new governor, we can vote this governor we have now out of office."

- Hagerstown

"I think we ought to file a suit like Virginia and Pennsylvania are doing. They're starting to clean house of some of their politicians. Hagerstown and Washington County ought to do that because all they've done is spend money, and then they just want to add on more taxes. They keep building for their own purposes, not for anybody else's. The farms are disappearing, and one day there won't be anyplace to get anything to eat."

- Hagerstown

"I really think it's a great idea to rearrange the county commission. When all the voters get out to vote this year, remember all those guys who said they wouldn't take that big raise. Mr. Munson from Maugansville was the first one to say he wouldn't take it, but it seems that he got a $10,000 raise for some reason."

- Hagerstown

"What a shame. I just read in the paper that Michael Jackson is now making his home in Bahrain. He'll come back to visit the U.S. now and then, but he will not come back here to live because he wasn't treated right. What a shame."

- Williamsport

"I really think it's sad the way this town is increasing the fees for trash and flush taxes, as well as gas and electric, and then when the poor people can't pay, they turn it off. How in the world do these poor people do it? Rent in this town goes from $750 on up. Landlords sure do make the bucks, don't they? Living in their nice homes with heat and electricity. It's all about money in this town, and no one wants to help the poor and the homeless."

- Hagerstown

"Why don't people who lose their dogs and cats check the SPCA? If you love them, go get them. It's very sad that these dogs and cats have to be put down."

- Hagerstown

"God bless all of our veterans who have served us in the past, the living and the deceased. A special prayer for those who are serving now in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere in the world. They're always loved by everyone. I will attend church services and a special celebration at the senior center in Ranson."

- Charles Town, W.Va.

"I'm wondering why the state highway department painted all the parking spaces on the entrance ramps at the I-70 and I-81 intersection. Oh, that's right, that's for the senior citizens to park on before they go out on the highway."

- Halfway

"I'd like to know what's going on with the crossing guards in Hagerstown. Some wear green, some wear orange, some wear old-fashioned clothing. It's crazy. We don't know who's working where or what they're doing out there. Why don't they all dress alike or something? It looks awful. I hope the school board does something about it. I feel sorry for the girls who do dress properly."
