Group salutes McKee's efforts to fund ag education, farm aid

A Maryland legislator representing Washington County is among those honored at the Annual Rural Awards Luncheon on Oct. 28 for "efforts to improve the quality of life in rural Maryland."

The Rural Awards and the Annual Rural Maryland Summit are sponsored by the Rural Maryland Council, the Maryland Rural Health Association, the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Office of Primary Care and Rural Health, and the state's five rural regional planning and development councils.

In a press release, they said Del. Robert McKee. from District 2A, won an Outstanding Rural Legislator Award.

McKee is chairman of the Western Maryland Delegation, and co-chair of the Maryland General Assembly's Rural Caucus, the press release said.

As a senior minority member of the House Ways and Means Committee, McKee "tenaciously led the charge to provide substantial and ongoing sources of funding for both" the Maryland Agricultural Education and Rural Development Assistance Fund as well as the Maryland Agricultural and Resource Based Industry Development Corporation, according to the press release.

The Maryland Agricultural Education and Rural Development Assistance Fund provides grants to rural nonprofits and community colleges involved in agricultural education, and rural business and community development.

The Maryland Agricultural and Resource Based Industry Development Corporation provides "much-needed financial, business planning, and marketing assistance to Maryland's agricultural, forestry and seafood businesses," the press release said.
