CHAMBERSBURG, PA. - The makeup of the Tuscarora School Board will change slightly following Tuesday's general election, with two newcomers joining two incumbents who retained their seats.

Tuesday's top vote-getters, according to unofficial returns with all 13 of the district's precincts reporting, were newcomer Donnie Piper, the top vote-getter, with 1,841 votes; incumbent Janice Hawbaker with 1,537 votes; newcomer Beckie Jo Higgins with 1,402 votes; and incumbent Jane M. Rice with 1,366 votes.

Incumbent Jeffrey Spidel, with 1,337 votes, apparently failed to win re-election.

Piper, 50, of 10576 Reeder Road, Mercersburg, Pa., ran for the first time. He was a member of James Buchanan High School's first graduating class in 1972 and said he wants students today to have the same educational opportunities he had.

Hawbaker, 47, of 209 Park Ave., Mercersburg, was on the board before, from 1997 to 2001. She was appointed to fill out Roger Price's term.
