Cause of barn fire unknown

November 09, 2005

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Fire officials say they are still trying to determine the cause of a Monday morning fire that raced through a barn near Charles Town where construction equipment and antique cars were stored.

The barn, which was owned by the Marcus family, was between the two entrances of Briar Run subdivision along Flowing Springs Road, said Ed Smith, chief of the Independent Fire Co.

It was an old barn that had been enlarged and had two levels, Smith said.

The fire broke out shortly after midnight Sunday in the lower level where electrical service comes into the building, Smith said.

When fire crews arrived, fire was blowing out two large doors and other areas, Smith said.

It's unclear how many antique cars were in the building, Smith said. They fell on top of each other as the inside of the barn was consumed in flames, Smith said.
