"I would like to know if anybody out there can give me information on how to start cushion mums, the flowers. Do you start them from seed or how?"

- Hagerstown

"Millions of tons of leaves flow into the Chesapeake Bay each year. The state of Maryland has done nothing to stop this pollution. Everyone who does not own at least one tree should demand that Maryland tax tree owners to the limit, to halt this type of pollution."

- Rohrersville

"I'm sick and tired of the complaining and whining by people who have apparently just discovered the flush tax on their bill, and have only now apparently become aware of the new Medicare prescription drug plan and don't like it. Why didn't you pay attention to these bills and their provisions when they were up for consideration, and contact your elected representatives then, when your input might possibly have made a difference? I have little or no sympathy for you. This is what happens when you don't pay attention to what your government is doing."

- Frederick, Md.

"I'm tired of getting junk mail about cell phones, like 'buy one, get one free' offers. I get run over now by so many people in stores on cell phones. It seems like people are talking on the phone wherever you go. If I had one, I'm sure I wouldn't do that."

- Boonsboro

"Thank you ever so kindly for the flush fee, aka toilet tax bill, we received today. Please give us the correct staff to help save the bay, and come clean our septic systems. We pay more and get less and less."

- Clear Spring

"People who are deciding on the Medicare Plan D prescription plan, give it some thought and explore your options, such as AARP. You can wait until May to take part in Medicare Plan D with no penalty. The drug companies played a big role in deciding the cost of Medicare. Remember, drug companies, insurance companies, and oil companies set the price standards on most of our necessary costs. The gas prices came down when we began limiting our road time. Ask your doctor to help you reduce your drug costs. They know some ways to do it; mine does."

- Hagerstown

" A caller from Boonsboro said that there were no computer labs at the elementary school. There is no computer lab at Pleasant Valley, either. They took it away when they created a fifth grade classroom. These kids don't touch a computer, and it's a sin."

- Rohrersville

"There is a song that we used to sing in our church, and with everything going on today, I'd like to know the whole song. It goes 'To the night in the days of old, keeping watch on the mountain heights, came a vision of holy grail and a voice through the waiting night.' I don't know the rest of the song, so if anyone has the words to it, I think it would be a good thing for them to call in about it. It was such a beautiful song that we used to sing in our church all the time."

- Washington County

"Earlier today, Friday, Nov. 4, I heard Andy Rooney state that he doesn't like the term 'African-American'; that he still prefers the term 'Negro'. He's a liberal from CBS, a commentator of '60 Minutes' fame. If a Republican, such as Bill O'Reilly, Rush Limbaugh, or even George W. Bush, had said that, I would have heard about it all day long. He'd be chastised for what he said. I haven't heard anything out of anyone all day. That just goes to show you how biased the media really is. I did hear it and it just ticks me off every time I think of how everything is slanted."

- Hagerstown

"I'm calling in regards to the article about Howard Strauss leaving in the future to take of his family. I am one of the people who has been honored to be in his employ and to be his friend. He will be greatly missed. He has done so much for this county. His complete dedication should never be taken for granted, but a real man has to take care of his family first. He has been a real asset to this community, and I know that everyone will keep him in their prayers."

- Falling Waters, W.Va.

"I'm calling in response to the caller who said that they are so sick and tired of hearing about hunting as a tradition around here, and that animals weren't put here for us to shoot and kill. I found a deer a few days ago that had been shot through the jaw. It was not dead; it was very much alive, but we had to finish putting her out of her misery. She couldn't eat or anything. It was a young doe, and I think it is a disgrace. When they shoot animals just for trophies and don't eat the meat, that is not right."

- Hancock

"I'm reading in the Friday, Nov. 4, about cutting Social Security. If they cut us any more, we won't have any Social Security. I have worked my time; now let these other people, including the overpaid elected officials, put half of their salary into Medicare and Medicaid. They don't need it.."

- Hagerstown

"All of the $30 will not be going towards cleaning the bay. Some will be given to the collection agency and the lawyers to put a lien on your home if you don't pay. Yes, folks, they have a collection agency, and $30 is not all for the bay."

- Clear Spring
