"They came out scrappy," Weaver said. We haven't played in a week, so I think that might have been part of it, but once we got the ball to the net things started to go better."
Those things got better fast in the second game, as the Rebels raced out to a 17-3 lead. Lindsay Steiner and Caitlin Nicewarner headed the charge with three kills each.
Frederick inched to within seven, but was turned away after a Brittany Hyatt kill and consecutive aces by Steiner to even the match.
South struggled again early in the third game and trailed 10-5 before Weaver called a timeout. After the break the Rebels ran off seven of the next nine points to tie the game, then took advantage of seven Frederick errors down the stretch to seal the game and take a 2-1 lead.
"(In the timeout) I basically told them that we have to get ball control," Weaver said. "Some of our passing faltered, but we knew what we needed to do."
South carried the momentum into the fourth game, opened by Hyatt's clean ace. The Rebels kept rolling with help from 10 more Cadets errors - the final one a service error that gave South the win and a spot in the region semifinals Wednesday.
Hyatt had eight kills and 16 assists, while Nicewarner added nine kills for the Rebels. China Miller had 15 service points and four aces.
Frederick's Laura Evans finished with 10 kills. Steph Gardner had 11 assists and three aces.
