Groundbreaking set for Mike Callas Stadium

November 07, 2005

Officials will break ground for Mike Callas Stadium at North Hagerstown High School Thursday at 3 p.m.

Washington County Board of Education members and school staff, the Washington County Commissioners, and business and community leaders are expected to attend, according to a press release from the Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The school board has endorsed the project, which will be built using public and private money.

"Fundraising for the multimillion dollar project is continuing," said John Williamson, outgoing chairman of the stadium committee of North High Boosters Club Inc., the nonprofit organization that raises money to support athletic activities.

Rick Hill is the incoming chairman of the North Hagerstown High School Stadium Committee.

Callas Contractors Inc. will oversee construction of the stadium, which will be named for the company's late chairman, Mike Callas. The Washington County Board of Education recently approved contracts with the Hagerstown construction firm for construction management. The architectural firm designing the stadium project is Bushey Feight Morin Architects Inc. of Hagerstown.

North High's sports teams and bands have shared athletic and performance facilities with South Hagerstown High School at School Stadium for the past 47 years.

Stadium committee organizers said that while fundraising continues, the committee will announce how much has been raised, and how much more is needed, at the groundbreaking.

In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will take place in the North Hagerstown High School gymnasium.
