There are four categories for the Nurse of the Year awards - Registered Nurse (RN), Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Certified Medicine Aide (CMA) and Geriatric Nursing Assistant (GNA). A Nursing Manager of the Year is also selected. Each county had one winner in each category.

The nominees are selected by their co-workers and peers. The Long-Term Care Director of the Nurses Association then choose the winners based on 15 criteria, such as accuracy and neatness, interpersonal skills, self-motivated, completes work on time and willingness to go the extra mile.

"Each year, this dinner represents AOC's chance to thank the volunteers who give their time to participate in research studies and who have been integral in building AOC, and to visit with patients in an enjoyable and relaxing environment," said Dr. Nathan Wei, clinical director of the center.

Mr. and Mrs. John Moynihan recently participated in a rheumatoid arthritis study as healthy controls, while Ruby Nazelrod is participating in another rheumatoid arthritis study with the drug Humira.

"It was wonderful, the food was great, and I had a wonderful time," Nazelod said. "I met so many new people and I would have never imagined that this evening would turn out so wonderful". The Moynihans, who were also celebrating their wedding anniversary said, "It was a great evening for everyone."

AOC is enrolling volunteers for rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis of the hip and knee. Participants receive free arthritis care, and often get paid for time and travel. Phone 888-71 STUDY for more information.
