Talk about a high pressure final exam.

In order to land an A in Professor Korby Moss-Sanders class students must do the hustle and belt out tunes from the swing, jazz and rock 'n' roll eras, all while performing in front of a live audience.

Yikes!

This Saturday, Nov. 5, The Superlatives Hagerstown Community College Show Choir will perform Encore!, a musical review of tunes from the 1920s through current pop hits.

While the show promises to be entertaining, the show choir's 10 students have a bit more at stake - a crowd-pleasing performance equals a top grade.

For psychology major Blinne Nolan, 18, Saturday's performance will be the first time she's ever had to perform before an audience while both singing and dancing.

"It's nerve-racking," says the longtime ballet dancer. "I'm shaking thinking about it."

Still, students say they've enjoyed this semester's three-credit class while learning more about music, dancing and performing.

"It's a lot to think about," Nolan adds. "Learning all the lyrics and then the harmonies and then all the dance steps ... I appreciate show choir a lot more now. I never thought it was going to be this difficult."

Kelli Martin, 20, will be taking the stage with the show choir for a second time. She took the show choir class the first semester it was offered in 2004.

"I had so much fun the first semester so I thought I had to do it again," says the musical arts major. "You get to sing and dance and just have a good time."

In show choir, students learn more about the "fundamentals of music," different types of choreography and what it takes to put on a show, says Moss-Sanders. They also must develop a "sense of working as a team," she says. The show's choreography often has students dancing with partners or in line-dance format. That means performance success requires all students to work together.

"They all sing well, they all dance well. But it's putting both of them together that's the hardest part," Moss-Sanders says.

Encore! features dozens of well-known musical selections from every decade over the past 80 years. The songs often blend into each other, causing students to shift vocal and dance styles in just a few beats. From "Button Up Your Overcoat" to "Dancin' in the Street" to Mariah Carey's "Butterfly," Encore! is a fast-paced show that includes songs that will be recognized by people of all ages.

Brett Smith, 18, a former Williamsport High School Sophisti'Cat', says the show is shaping up to be "really fun."

The performance promises to be enjoyable for all audiences, Moss-Sanders says.

"It will probably be the most ... entertaining (free) evening (people) could have with their families," she says.
