Fire department receives $7,000 donation

November 03, 2005|By ERIN CUNNINGHAM

Hagerstown Fire Department Chief Gary Hawbaker said people don't often stop by the department with $7,000 donations.

So, when Dan Ryan Builders - a residential construction company - recently offered to donate that amount to the fire department, Hawbaker said it was a much-needed gift.

The money will be used to purchase a new covered trailer to transport specialized fire and rescue equipment, Hawbaker said.

"This is equipment we may only use a couple of times a year," Hawbaker said.

Fire engines and other vehicles carry equipment that is used every day. The trailer will transport tools and equipment firefighters use for water rescues, building collapses and other rare emergencies, he said.

The trailer will be stored at the Hagerstown Fire Department's headquarters at 25 W. Church St. in Hagerstown. Hawbaker said the department already owns several vehicles that can tow the trailer to emergency scenes.

Dan Ryan Builders is building 35 communities in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia.

"We recognize the significant services that firefighters provide to the community," John Migliore, president of the Hagerstown division of the company, said in a written release. "We hope this donation will help make their jobs a little easier and a lot safer."
