Town Center defined as redevelopment area

November 02, 2005|by TIFFANY ARNOLD

In order to attract more businesses, the Smithsburg Town Council unanimously decided to define its Town Center as a redevelopment area.

The council adopted the resolution at its meeting Tuesday night.

A county ordinance exempts commercial areas from excise taxes if they are in regions officially defined as redevelopment areas.

In August, Washington County Commissioners President Gregory I. Snook asked the town to consider defining redevelopment areas within the town for the purpose of excise tax exemption, Smithsburg Mayor Mildred "Mickey" Myers said.

The council hopes the move will lure more businesses downtown, Myers said.
