SMITHSBURG - The community is rallying around a Smithsburg High School teacher as he copes with the diagnosis of kidney cancer in his 4-year-old son, Asher.
Aaron Hopkins, the art teacher and Young Life leader at the school, has been commuting to the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore as a result of his son's illness.
A drive has been launched to help the family by collecting cash, gas cards, MasterCard debit cards, gift certificates to restaurants, grocery stores or Toys R Us.
Contributions may be sent to Robin Daughtridge at Smithsburg High School, 66 N. Main St., Smithsburg, MD 21783.
