Mail Call

October 27, 2005

"The Hancock band may be very small, but they were wonderful at the Showcase of Bands. They were the hosts, and they should be congratulated."

- Hagerstown

"I recently attended a fundraiser at the Star Community Center in Hagerstown. It was a very enjoyable experience, and I would like to thank Katie Hoover of Star for all the hard work and planning she did for this event. She wasn't even mentioned in the article in the paper. She sat at the auction tent, and attended to just about everything from parking to registering vendors, and even sang for the church service. Way to go, Katie Hoover. Let's do it again next year."

- Hagerstown

"I'd like to thank the person from Williamsport who called about the Iraqi people learning to make chocolate pie so they wouldn't kill any more people. I've got another idea - how about friendship cake? If they shared that with everyone, maybe they wouldn't be killing any more."

"The more I read about the Medicare Part B prescription plan, the more I feel that every congressman who voted in favor of that mish-mash should be hanged. I think every one of them is now rubbing his hands together and saying, 'thank God I will never need that.'''

- Hagerstown

"If Robinwood is the best location for the new hospital, then why did they have to get special permission for sewage and special permission for how high to build it? If it was the best place, you wouldn't have to get special permission."

- Hagerstown

"Regarding the hospital moving to Robinwood, I was at the meeting. Mr. Hamill gave a good sales pitch, and we may need a new, modern, up-to-date facility; however, Robinwood is the worst possible location due to the traffic congestion at every road leading there. The Dual Highway is a disaster waiting to happen. Someone should have known several years ago that putting a large medical facility such as Robinwood near a busy highway would create more congestion. Now they want to put the hospital next to it. Doesn't anyone have a long-range plan?"

- Hagerstown

"Here's an idea. How about if we take donations for everything that's going on in Iraq, and let's just keep all the money here that the taxpayers in the U.S. are paying to help our own people when things such as Hurricane Katrina come up."

- Hagerstown

"This is in response to the person who thought that sitting on your front porch at 5 or 6 a.m. talking on a cell phone doesn't make you a drug dealer. It just so happens that I could everything that was being said on the telephone. I heard the word 'marijuana' mentioned, and I knew right then and there. I think that's a drug."

"I'd like to know why when I call a phone number that's in the newspaper - about a job or anything else - and get a fax machine screeching in my ears. What does that mean? Why would they have that? Why do I have to put up with that?"

- Hagerstown

"This is to all people in Hagerstown and surrounding areas who use the Hagerstown ice rink. If it keeps kids off the streets, way to go. Taxpayers' money or not, quit crying about kids who want to have fun and get into a program and excel at something. I hope that they continue to do what they're doing, because it's just one little place for kids to go and have something to do. There should be many more community centers using taxpayers' money to keep kids off the streets."

- Broadfording Road

"This is to the woman in Greencastle, Pa., whose husband has been a truck driver for 10 years. All I've got to say is, 'way to go.' Trucks bring our food and supplies and everything we need. They're the ones who brought relief to the hurricane victims and so on. They should all be praised for their hard work and long hours. Trucks are being made better right here in Hagerstown. I build truck engines and transmissions for a living. These truck drivers are good guys and women. Everyone should be proud of every trucker out there."

- Hagerstown

"I'm a concerned citizen calling about the annexation of Cedar Lawn. The public hearing has been postponed until November. Is this going to be on the front page of the paper? I think they should stop work on the sewer pipe until this is settled."

- Cedar Lawn

"I've been reading Mail Call lately, and I'm tired of people complaining about the ice rink in Hagerstown being subsidized or helped with finances. I have nothing to do with the ice rink whatsoever, but these little kids love ice skating, and if I had little children I would gladly take them. I think it's wonderful for kids to learn skating and hockey. How come you don't complain about other sports being subsidized? I coached Little League for 14 years, and I think it's great for kids to have the ice rink. God bless them."

"This is to the Hagerstown caller worrying about the flush tax. Don't worry about that - start worrying about that double water and sewer. This is totally outrageous and unfair. We can't do it."

- Maugansville
