October 18, 2005

Nearly 1,200 American and international show horses are at the Farm Show Arena in Harrisburg through Saturday for the 60th annual Pennsylvania National Horse Show.

Horses and riders are competing for nearly a dozen national championships and $340,000 in prizes.

The event's highlight is the $65,000 Budweiser Grand Prix de Penn National on Saturday. Most members of the 2004 Silver Medal U.S. Olympic Show Jumping Team are expected to compete, as are Athens Olympics riders from other nations, past Olympians and top professionals.

These riders, who spend nearly a week at the show, open each evening session tonight through Saturday with a jumper class.

The Pennsylvania National begins with four days of competition for junior riders under age 18.

Tonight, general admission costs $10 or $5 for seniors and children ages 12 and under. From Wednesday through Saturday, general admission costs $15, or $8 for children and seniors. Reserved seating is available Wednesday, Thursday and Friday for $25.
