Area Roundup - Leopards win MVAL Antietam title

BOONSBORO - Shelby Layman and Shannon Fowkes each scored a goal as No. 2 Smithsburg blanked No. 6 Boonsboro 2-0 Thursday evening to capture the MVAL Antietam title.

Boonsboro outshot Smithsburg, 11-5.

Kirsten Cacciola had four saves for the Leopards (12-1-1, 7-0), while Annie Meyers had six saves for the Warriors (7-4, 3-3).

JV: Boonsboro, 2-1.

Williamsport 1, Clear Spring 0

WILLIAMSPORT - Alluka Ogle-Moore scored on a pass from Amy Taylor with 5:17 remaining in the second overtime to lift Williamsport past Clear Spring in an MVAL Antietam match.

Elizabeth Andrews had 12 saves for the Blazers (2-6-2, 0-4), who have gone 0-1-2 in three double-overtime contests this season. Williamsport (3-5-1, 1-3-1) outshot Clear Spring, 36-12.



No. 1 Boonsboro 2, Smithsburg 1

SMITHSBURG - Tyler McKenrick scored unassisted with two minutes left in regulation to lift Boonsboro over Smithsburg in the MVAL Antietam.

The Warriors (11-0, 6-0) tied the game 1-1 when Nick Stenersen took a feed from Eric Fries in the game's 70th minute.

The Leopards (6-6-1, 3-3) took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Mark Vomend. Ryan Keller had the assist. JV: Smithsburg, 1-0.

No. 2 Greencastle 4, Trinity 0

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Treavor Gelsinger had two goals and an assist to lead Greencastle past Trinity in the Mid-Penn Capital.

Trevor Frederick and Evon Wiestling each had a goal for the Blue Devils (13-2-1, 10-1), while Cory DeMaster and Mac Frederick each had an assist and Josh Zook made six saves.

Hedgesville 3, No. 8 Mercersburg 2

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Luis Alaniz scored twice to lead Hedgesville (7-8) past Mercersburg.

Justin Mellott and Leo Watanabe each scored for the Blue Storm (4-3-2) and Jordon Exeter and Stephon Fullerton each had an assist.

No. 9 Williamsport 4, Clear Spring 2

CLEAR SPRING - Derek Hadley and Charlie Spoonire each scored twice to lead Williamsport past Clear Spring in the MVAL Antietam.

Hadley, Derek Wolfensberger and Matt Oliver each had an assist for the Wildcats (8-3, 6-2).

Francesco Scotto DiCarlo and Adam Kriner each scored for the Blazers (0-9-1, 0-4) and Derek Hanes had an assist.

JV: Williamsport, 3-0.

Northern 2, Waynesboro 1

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Nick Adams scored the only goal for Waynesboro (4-8-1) and Zach Settlage made 12 saves in the Indians' loss to Mid-Penn Colonial leader Northern.

Grace 5, South Hagerstown 1

Stephen Wilson, Jake Reese and Nick Bunting each had a goal and an assist to guide Grace Academy past South Hagerstown (1-9-1).

Zack Morgan and Pat Salvagno also scored for the Knights (4-11) and Danny Michael had an assist.


No. 6 Greencastle 3, Harrisburg 0

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Jade Dunhour had 23 service points, including nine aces, and eight assists to lead Greencastle past Harrisburg 25-2, 25-10, 25-9 in a Mid-Penn Capital matchup.

Brittany Main had 12 service points and Amanda Ritchey added 11 assists for the Blue Devils (13-2).

JV: Greencastle, 2-0.

No. 7 James Buchanan 3, Trinity 0

CAMP HILL, Pa. - Amy Heisey had 18 digs to lead James Buchanan past Trinity 25-11, 25-11, 25-17 in a Mid-Penn Capital match.

Erica Helfrick had 15 assists and Jess Snyder added 10 service points and six kills for the Rockets (14-2).

JV: James Buchanan, 2-0.

Southern Fulton 3, Hyndman 1

WARFORDSBURG, Pa. - Grace McCarthy recorded 24 digs, 23 assists and 15 service points to lead Southern Fulton to an 18-25, 25-23, 25-8, 25-16 Mid-Penn Capital win against visiting Hyndman.

Courtney Trainor had 14 service points for the Indians (8-7, 5-5) and Natasha Bard added 12 service points and seven kills. Sam Bain had 10 digs and nine kills in the win.

JV: Southern Fulton, 2-1.

McConnellsburg 3, Chestnut Ridge 2

FISHERSTOWN, Pa. - Emile Ott served 13 straight points in the fourth game to spark McConnellsburg to an 18-25, 27-29, 25-12, 25-20, 15-11 win over Chestnut Ridge in a key Sideling Hill League matchup.

Ott finished with 23 service points and 23 assists for the Spartans (12-3, 9-1), who were swept by the Lions earlier this season. Gretchen Swope had 20 kills and Sarah Taylor added 15 assists in the win.

JV: McConnellsburg, 2-0.


North Hagerstown 22, Allegany 13

North (5-1): Alec Nelson 134 yds. rushing, 2 TDs; Jordan Ricketts 114 yds. rushing, TD; Preston Button, Michael Rivas 2-point conversion reception each.


Millersville 9, Shepherd 1

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Melissa Cameron scored three goals and Carly Kabbeko added two as Millersville snapped Shepherd University's six-game winning sreak.

Lauren Cepko scored the only goal for the Rams (7-7-1).


Black Rock Club tied for 3rd

ORLANDO, Fla. - Local golf pro Dirk Schultz and amateurs Don Grabill, Roy Lorshbaugh, Scott Matheny and Rich Moyer, competing for the Black Rock Golf Club, are tied for third after Day 1 of the Buick Scramble National Golf Championships at Orange County National's Panther Lake.

The group shot a round of 57 and are one stroke behind the leaders in the Gross Division.

The fivesome advanced to the national tournament after winning the Mid-Atlantic PGA Sectional Championships in August. Schultz has led a Black Rock Golf Club team to nationals in five of the past six years.

Play resumes today and Saturday before the tournament cuts the field to 24 teams in both the Net and Gross divisions.
