You Said It

"This is to all the parents of 12- to 14-year-old adolescents who think that the mall and the movies is a good baby sitter. Try sitting through a feature with a row of giggling, screaming, talking and popcorn-throwing adolescents." - Hagerstown

"From Sharpsburg to Hagerstown and probably beyond, why are there four or five different gas prices? Sharpsburg has the highest that I've seen. How do they do this? Do the stations call each other when they're changing their prices? I wish somebody could explain this for me." - Washington County

"I just read Tim Rowland's column regarding the mayor and council's bus tour to certain sites, and that they need to discuss at this evening's meeting the fact that the cost of the charter of the bus is appalling. I do agree on that point. It seems like the simple solution would have been to have rented an eight-passenger minivan and used a volunteer or assigned a driver. They probably could have done it for a little bit of nothing. Oh, that's right, they can hardly stand to be in the same room, let alone to be in one vehicle. I forgot - that's my mistake." - Hagerstown

"I want to report to the person who hit my dog that we spent $2,500 for her. She's doing very well. I'd appreciate it if the next time you could stop and let us know. We know your car, and I just want to thank you again. My dog had a fractured pelvis, crushed leg and crushed hip, but now she's like nothing ever happened to her. We do not appreciate the driver not stopping. We live on Tice Road." - Falling Waters, W.Va.

"I'm one of the citizens who are truly concerned about the sexual predators and ex-convicts who have gotten out and are living in the area. What about these people who have been arrested for sexual assault? They get a high-priced lawyer, get their charges reduced to maybe a third- or fourth-degree misdemeanor sexual assault, and they don't even do jail time. They might pay a fine, they might settle with the family of the victim. These people are not on any Web site, because their charges have been reduced to misdemeanors." - Hagerstown

"Congratulations to the students at Boonsboro High School on their well-written, informative stories in the Oct. 11 Herald-Mail. Good job, kids." - Hagerstown

"Regarding the flush tax, I think if you'll check, you'll find that the delegates from your area are the ones who voted to pass this. Most people down in Annapolis are Democrats, and that's who runs the country. We might have a Republican governor, but we have Democrats running the state. The governor is not to be blamed. You have to get the facts straight." - Boonsboro

"I'm calling about the abuse of 911. I've called three times in about two years - once when my 78-year-old mother was choking. I gave her the Heimlich maneuver but I wasn't sure it was going to work. The gentleman on the phone said to try it again and it finally worked. If there is an abuse in the number of calls, perhaps counseling is needed in terms of where the person should be living. Other than that, if my mother fell down while alone in the house, I would expect them to respond and to respond quickly to her need. I think that is an emergency." - Washington County

"I used to be a manager at a pizza restaurant. The pizzas cost $3.75 to make, and they charged $15. If somebody comes up to my house, I've got to scrape up $20 to have a take-out pizza. Maybe I can't afford it, and maybe I can. You want a tip? How much do you expect? All you'll get is a dollar or two. All you're doing is a three-second service job for me. If you want to get paid more, tell those people who hired you to pay you more. They're making the profit."

"The choice of photographs on the Oct. 11 sports page showing a fumble by a high school quarterback demonstrates a real lack of compassion by The Herald-Mail. Choose pictures that represent good plays, that can go in the family scrapbook. I have no connection to either team, but I know the pride in newspaper pictures. These are kids playing high school sports; try to give everyone involved something to be proud of." - Smithsburg

"I was really taken aback recently, passing a church sign in the Smithsburg area that read 'Forgive your enemies - it really messes up their heads.' This is about as far away from the Christian message as you can get. Christ's message was 'Love your enemies, and do good to those who persecute you.'" - Smithsburg

"What a wonderful addition the Shepherd Ram band was at the Showcase of Marching Bands. I hope they're invited back next year. Each school should be proud of how their band performed. They were fantastic. Way to go, kids." - Hagerstown
