"I'm an Afro-American woman, and I'm just wondering why when Afro-American movies come out, they're never shown in Hagerstown. I wanted to see the movie 'Gospel' and it's not in Hagerstown or Frederick."

"I just thought people would like to know that the $2,000 checks that the government is giving to people who were displaced from the hurricanes can't be cashed in Hagerstown because the people don't have photo IDs. Does this make any sense? I sure don't think so. Somebody needs to check up on this."

"I'm calling about The Herald-Mail Forum column in the Monday, Oct. 10, paper. I don't think that it's very fair for people to start judging Mr. (Lew) Metzner unless they know him as a person. Evidently, he was elected to the City Council, so there must be something positive as to what this gentleman is doing for the city. So before you know a person, in a business-related or personal way, you shouldn't judge him."

"Isn't it strange that every time Bush's ratings go down, we hear about 'terrorist plots' and the war in Iraq? I think it's more important that our National Guard would have been in this country with the situation in Louisiana and Mississippi instead of being slaughtered in a no-win war."

"I'm the person who called in about the additives in our food. That wasn't a sarcastic joke. I'm serious about this. I am heavy, I am overweight and I have tried every diet coming and going to try to get rid of weight. I am diabetic, have respiratory problems and I need to lose the weight. I have never in my life seen so many overweight 8-year-old girls and boys, and I believe it's coming from the additives in the food."

"The lakes at Hagerstown City Park are fed by underground springs. The springs are fed by rain. We've had a drought, therefore the water in the springs is low, and the lake water is not replenished and refreshed efficiently."

"I would like to know why the newspaper puts the Neighbors page in among the classified car ads. For us women who do not look at car ads, we miss the Neighbors page. This seems like the wrong place to put it. "

"The musical concert given by the Hagerstown Municipal Band on Oct. 9 at the North High auditorium was very enjoyable. I would like to thank everyone for making this musical entertainment possible. The admission was free; however, free-will donations were suggested for the Red Cross to aid in the recent hurricane problems."

"I went through Hancock and gas was $2.79. I got back to Hagerstown and it was $2.89 everywhere. I made a couple of phone calls and asked why gas was higher here compared to Hancock. At a little after 12 noon, some of the stations in Hagerstown dropped to $2.79, while other stations were still at $2.89. Guess they haven't gotten the word yet. If one can do it, they all can do it."

"It's time to bring out the saying that was made up after the Vietnamese war, when the soldiers came home. Those soldiers were not greeted too well, and now we understand, hopefully. 'Hate the war, but love the warrior.' These men signed up for the service to defend this country, and if defending this country means being in another country, then we have to do it. Again, 'hate the war, but love the warrior.'"

"I'd just like to say that I was a little upset by the comment about the ice rink being shoved down somebody's throat. Many of us have lots of children who skate there, and we realize that there's been a little bit of turmoil there through the years. However, the 200 or 300 kids who benefit from the skating programs offered there have a unique opportunity to participate in something that they truly love, along with parents who enjoy winter sports. I would just like to voice my opinion in favor of the ice rink, and challenge those people to come out and really see for themselves. Come watch a hockey game, come to a figure-skating show, come see what really goes on there and how much these kids really do love this. Instead of complaining against it, everybody needs to pitch in to make these facilities a positive for the community."

"In response to a caller's question, courts have ruled that signs must be posted warning of sobriety checkpoints so that stopping at a checkpoint is voluntary. Stopping motorists without cause is unconstitutional."

- Waynesboro, Pa.

"As a former Baltimorian, I'd like to comment on the Baltimore Ravens' performance and football game on Oct. 9. They actually disgraced the city of Baltimore with their actions. It's one thing to lose a football game, but to act in such an unsportsmanlike manner is not a good representation for kids or of a city. I live in Smithsburg now, and I'm glad of it."
