CUMBERLAND, Md. - Ryland Newman rushed 20 times for 217 yards and two touchdowns Saturday night as No. 1 Jefferson beat Fort Hill 27-7 in a Cumberland Valley Athletic League game.

Newman gave Jefferson (7-0, 3-0) a 7-0 lead with a 2-yard run in the first quarter. Newman's 77-yard scoring run in the second quarter gave the Cougars a 14-7 halftime advantage.

Brennan McLaughlin hauled in a 24-yard pass from Patrick Burns and Cory Carper added a rushing touchdown to cap the scoring.

The win was the Cougars' first in the last four meetings between the two teams.

It was the first loss of the season for the Sentinels (4-1, 2-1).

No. 4 Middletown 16 Winters Mill 14

MIDDLETOWN, Md. - Spencer Cox hauled in an 8-yard pass from Kevin Linehan with 2.8 seconds left to lift Middletown over Winters Mill in an MVAL Piedmont game.


With the Falcons (3-2, 1-1) leading 7-3 late in the second quarter, Knights nose guard Andrew Crown forced, recovered and returned a fumble and 27 yards for a touchdown.

Cox gave Middletown (5-0, 2-0) an early 3-0 lead with a 22-yard field goal.

No. 5 Mercersburg 22 Blair Academy 6

BLAIRSTOWN, N.J. - Jarvis Hodge rushed for 223 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries to lead Mercersburg Academy past Blair Academy in a Mid-Atlantic Prep League game.

Tyler Newberry completed 7 of 10 passes for 77 yards and ran for two TDs for the Blue Storm (6-0, 3-0). David Ashton had four receptions for 67 yards and caught two conversion passes.

MSD 80, Hyde School 6

FREDERICK, Md. - The Orioles improved to 4-1 after pummeling Hyde School late Friday.

MSD's only loss came last week, 30-28 in OT against Avalon.


Mercersburg 3 Jefferson 1

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Nicole Saracino had 24 service points and eight digs to lead Mercersburg Academy past Jefferson 25-27, 25-7, 25-11, 25-16 in nonleague play.

Cree Riley had 14 kills and 11 service points for the Blue Storm (5-3) while Libby Miga added eight digs. Lizz Harvey had eight service points.

JV: Jefferson, 2-0.


HCC at CCRI Invitational

WARWICK, R.I. - Hagerstown Community College went undefeated at the Community College of Rhode Island Invitational Tournament.

The Hawks (30-2) posted sweeps of Morton College (30-25, 30-20), Springfield College (30-24, 30-10), host CCRI (30-23, 30-25) and Harvard's JV squad (30-11, 30-24).

Lindsey Plotner led Hagerstown with 39 kills and 11 blocks, Katie Spoonire added 33 kills and 45 digs and Staci Grabill piled up 111 assists (13.87 per game). Karey Toms had 39 kills and 45 digs and Savanah Wetzel had 52 digs.

Shepherd 3, Glenville 0

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - Kristy Cramer had 17 assists and three aces to help Shepherd University sweep Glenville State 30-25, 30-18, 30-18 in West Virginia Conference play.

Lauren Durbin had eight kills and six blocks while Susanna Hill posted a team-high 17 digs and four aces for the Rams (9-14, 6-4). Kori Ford had 11 kills and 11 assists.


Salem 5, Shepherd 3

SALEM, W.Va. - Richard Smith had a pair of goals and an assist for the Rams in a WVIAC loss to Salem International.

Bernard Walters also scored for Shepherd (11-2-1, 2-2). Salem improved to 6-3-1, 4-0.

SALEM, W.Va. - Erin Kinnear had a goal and an assist as the Rams posted their fifth straight shutout victory.

Courtney McCauley added an insurance goal for the Rams (6-6-1, 3-2), who tied a school record for the number of shutouts in one season. The five-game winning streak is the longest in the program's six-year history.

Salem dropped to 5-4-1, 3-1.
