Area roundup - Patriots' offense prolific in victory

October 08, 2005

HAMPSTEAD, Md. - No. 6 Thomas Johnson scored four touchdowns in the second quarter en route to a 44-6 win over North Carroll in an MVAL Chesapeake game.

Bobby Humphries scored on runs of 3 and 22 yards for the Patriots (4-1, 2-0) and Duvall hauled in a 5-yard pass from Brad Betson.

Duvall also returned a punt 6 yards for a score. Terrance Kerns and Dustin Muse each had scoring runs of more than 20 yards.

The Panthers (1-4, 0-2) were held scoreless until the fourth quarter.

Liberty 10, Walkersville 0

ELDERSBURG, Md. - Alex Harpine scored the game's only touchdown on a 9-yard run as Liberty (1-4, 1-1) shut out Walkersville (1-4, 0-1) in the MVAL Piedmont for the home team's first win of the season.

John Marshall 21, Hedgesville 7

GLENWOOD, W.Va. - Dan Smith's 3-yard scoring run in the first quarter was all the offense the Eagles could muster as Hedgesville lost a nonleague game at John Marshall (5-1).

Marshall finished with 54 yards on nine carries for the Eagles (2-5). Mike Lopez completed 6 of 10 passes for 165 yards.

Musselman 17, Keyser 14

INWOOD, W.Va. - Reserve kicker Allen Kees booted a 19-yard field goal in overtime to lift Musselman past Keyser in a nonleague game.

Lionell Royer rushed 13 times for 99 yards and Shon Jackson had 81 yards on 16 carries for the Applemen (3-4). Royer and Jackson ran for touchdowns. Musselman won despite turning the ball over five times.

Jeremy Green ran 10 times for 82 yards and a score for the Golden Tornado (3-3). Marcus Brown added 64 yards and a score.

Model School 13, Hancock 0

WASHINGTON - Kellen Collins rushed 18 times for 113 yards and a touchdown to lead Model past Hancock on Thursday.

The Eagles tallied 281 yards on offense, while the Panthers (2-2) managed only 94 yards.

The Panthers fumbled twice inside the Eagles' 2 and trailed 7-0 at halftime.

Jaret Trail had 72 yards rushing on 21 carries for the Panthers, who lost their second straight game.

No. 9 Tuscarora 2, No. 6 T. Johnson 1

FREDERICK, Md. - Patrick Treadwell and Zach Saltzman each scored a goal to lead Tuscarora past Thomas Johnson in an MVAL Chesapeake match.

The loss was the Patriots' first against a Frederick County opponent in nearly five years, as well as the first county loss since Mitch Rubin took over coaching duties at the school.

"They are the standard in boys soccer in the area," Tuscarora coach Marty Stiteler said. "Heck, last year they were a 4A state playoff team. I think they've won their region twice in five years, and won their conference four of five yeras. For an up-and-coming school like ourselves to beat a team like TJ is a big deal."

Tuscarora improved to 6-6 overall and 3-2 in league play. Thomas Johnson dropped to 5-4-1, 4-2.

Daniel Shannon was credited with an assist for the Titans and Philip Grewe had seven saves.

The Titans held a 2-0 lead at halftime, but the early going wasn't easy.

"I don't think we got the ball out of our zone for the first 10 to 15 minutes," Stitler said. "They came out flying. They take big pride shutting teams out and defending well. It's a credit to our defense for not allowing them to score until the 79th minute."

Matt Knauss scored for the Patriots.
