Couple faces shoplifting charges

October 08, 2005|By PEPPER BALLARD

A Hagerstown couple sought in connection with shoplifting incidents at several county stores was arrested Friday afternoon outside Food Lion on Virginia Avenue in Hagerstown, Washington County Sheriff's Department Investigator Greg Alton said.

Mark Dwayne Rice, 38, and Sandra Lee Rice, 44, who share a last known address of 428 Park Place, were arrested on warrants charging them with several counts of felony and misdemeanor theft in connection with incidents dating to Sept. 1, Alton said.

Alton said the manager of AutoZone on Virginia Avenue, which is near the grocery store, called police to tell them the couple had just left the automobile supply store at about 2 p.m. He said the manager recognized the couple from photographs in either the newspaper or on the local television news. The manager then called back to say that the couple went to Food Lion next door.

"He was in the store. She was in the vehicle waiting outside the store," Alton said.

The couple's children were with them, he said.

The Rices were allegedly using a Plymouth Voyager van that had been reported stolen Oct. 3 from Rod's Auto in Washington Township, Pa., Alton said.

"According to the little boy, they were there to buy a newspaper," he said.

Alton has said that the couple was sometimes accompanied by a teenage boy or a baby stroller.
