Volleyball notes - Leopards prepare for difficult week

October 07, 2005

Games to watch this week

  • No. 2 Williamsport at No. 8 Smithsburg, Monday - It wasn't too long ago that this was one of the highlights of the high school sports year, and arguably the most competitive rivalry in the area. It doesn't pack quite as much punch nowadays, but it's still a battle of two top-tier MVAL Antietam squads. It's also the start of a brutal three-day stretch for the Leopards ...

  • No. 8 Smithsburg at No. 3 Boonsboro, Wednesday - ... since Smithsburg has to turn right around and face the county's other powerhouse two days later. A victory in either of these games would be a major breakthrough for the Leopards. After the Warriors fell two points short in a classic against Williamsport, they turned it up a notch to win the Thomas Johnson Invitational.

  • No. 10 South Hagerstown at North Hagerstown, Thursday - The Rebels' sweep of the Hubs on Sept. 20 was the first victory for South over its crosstown rivals in three years.

Attention, coaches

A few coaches have inquired about what exactly is considered an assist or a dig. These statistical questions (and all others) are best answered by the NCAA stats manual, online at the Web site http://www.ncaa.org/library/statistical/volleyball_stats_manual/2005/2005_volleyball_stats_manual.pdf.The manual requires Adobe Acrobat to open.
