EMS personnel list calls for service

SMITHSBURG - During September, Smithsburg Emergency Medical Services personnel responded to 114 calls for service, bringing the 2005 total to 866 responses as of Sept. 30, according to Capt. Jim Ulrich.

Of the 114 calls for September, 10 were to Frederick County, Md., 31 were inside town limits, 25 calls were in the Hagerstown area, and another 10 calls were to the Leitersburg area of the response region.

A total of 64 patients were taken to area hospitals during the month. The department also assisted on four fire-related calls.

Also in September, the department assisted with calls for neighboring Community Rescue Service in Hagerstown during the CRS 50th anniversary celebration.


On Sept. 10, Smithsburg EMS sent an ambulance to Louisiana to assist with relief efforts in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

The Smithsburg ambulance was part of a convoy of emergency vehicles and personnel from Maryland, including ambulances and personnel from Hagerstown's Community Rescue Service, and personnel from Williamsport Volunteer Ambulance Service.

The Smithsburg ambulance served the Louisiana area for approximately two weeks before returning home to Washington County.

Church association holding hunger walk

SMITHSBURG - The Smithsburg Area Church Association (SACA) will be sponsoring its second annual Dean Mouk Memorial Walk for the Hungry beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Registration will begin at 12:30 p.m.

Walkers will meet at Lions Park in Smithsburg and walk from the park to Welty Church of the Brethren and back.

All proceeds from the walk will benefit the local food pantry of SACA.

Class of 1985 plans 20th reunion

SMITHSBURG - The Smithsburg High School Class of 1985 will hold its 20th reunion Oct. 15, beginning with the homecoming parade at 10 a.m. and the homecoming football game at 2 p.m.

Happy hour will begin at 7 p.m. at the Creekside.

Seventh-graders to hold Walk-a-Thon

SMITHSBURG - Smithsburg Middle School seventh-grade students will sponsor a Walk-a-Thon Thursday, Oct. 20, as part of their student service learning project.

A five-mile walk around the high school track will be undertaken to collect donations for a charitable organization and as a class assignment.

This year, donations will go to the Red Cross hurricane relief fund.

Lions Club taking sandwich orders

SMITHSBURG - The Smithsburg Lions Club sandwich sale will be Oct. 20 and 22.
