Information policy adopted by board

Washington County Public Schools' paper trail now includes the school system's first written policy on handling public requests for information and documents.

The Board of Education on Tuesday night approved on second reading the school system's process for handling requests for information.

According to the policy, the school system should generally make available records without a written request from the interested party. The custodian of records shall require a written request if he or she believes a request would help the school system respond, or if he or she believes the school system might not be allowed to release the requested information.

According to the policy, the school system should produce records within 30 days of a written request. If the request is denied, the school system should provide the applicant a written statement detailing the reasons for the denial within 10 days.
