Helping Katrina victims

October 04, 2005|By Yvette May

Boonsboro Elementary School Principal Scott Woods, right, dressed in a chicken suit and with pink hair, and Paige Fishack's fifth-grade class present a check for $11,155.21 to Julie Barr-Strasburg, executive director of the Washington County Chapter of the American Red Cross.

The fifth-graders initiated the fundraiser at the school to help Hurricane Katrina victims. Woods promised that if students raised $6,000, he would wear pink hair to school and if they raised $7,000, he would dress up like a chicken during lunches. The students raised so much that Woods decided to do both on Sept. 23.

"Our goal was set by my class by dividing the total number of children in the school by what they thought was a reasonable request," Fishack said.

Fishack credited a super group of kids, a strong community, and supportive teachers and administrators for the fundraiser's success.
