Choices In Colleges and Careers event slated for tonight at South

Choices In Colleges and Careers 2005 will be today from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at South Hagerstown High School.

The annual college and career fair provides high school and middle school students and their parents access to representatives from colleges, universities and trade schools, and all branches of the military. More than 110 institutions will be represented.

Scholarship money will be awarded to the schools sending the most students to the event, and middle-school attendance at the event will be considered for the scholarship awards for the first time.

A Choices In Colleges and Careers essay contest also is open to current juniors and seniors attending Washington County Public Schools, with scholarship money to be awarded to the top three entries. Details of the contest are available at www.choices-c-c.org.

Essays must be submitted to school guidance offices by Dec. 1.

Town and Country Garden Club scholarship applications available

The Town and Country Garden Club of Hagers-town is offering a scholarship to a graduating high school student who will be entering a college, university or institution of higher learning with plans to major in horticulture, agriculture, landscape design or a related field.

Also eligible to apply are any previous recipients who want to continue majoring in the above fields and who have maintained a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.

Applications are available from any Washington County school counselor. The deadline to apply is April 1, 2006, and the scholarship will be awarded on or before May 1, 2006.

Shepherd to host open houses for prospective students, parents

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Shepherd University's Office of Admissions will hold Saturday open houses for prospective students and their parents on Oct. 15 and Nov. 12.

Freshmen and transfer students may meet with faculty members, talk with current students, tour the campus and learn about the admissions process. The sessions will run from 9 a.m. to noon.

Frederick County superintendent to host conversations at schools

FREDERICK, Md. - Parents and guardians in Catoctin High School's feeder schools are invited to attend a conversation with Frederick County Public Schools' Superintendent Linda Burgee on Tuesday, Oct. 18, at 7 p.m. in the Emmitsburg Elementary School media center.

Those attending may ask questions and talk informally with Burgee.

Catoctin High School feeder schools include Emmitsburg, Lewistown, Sabillasville and Thurmont elementary schools, Thurmont Primary School and Thurmont Middle School.

Conversations with the superintendent for other school feeder areas are scheduled for the following dates.
