County sends emergency workers to hurricane zone

WASHINGTON COUNTY

A second team of two emergency communications specialists from Washington County's Division of Fire and Emergency Services has been sent to Louisiana to help relieve 911 emergency dispatchers in the area stricken by Hurricane Katrina, according to a county press release.

A team sent Sept. 19 is returning to Washington County. A third set of call takers will be sent in two weeks, according to the release.

Communications Chief Bardonna Woods said that Emergency Communications Specialist Joey Chojnacki and Capt. Jim Blevins flew to New Orleans on Thursday for a 10-day work schedule in Jefferson Parrish, according to the release.

Woods said that Capt. Tina Bowers and Emergency Communications Specialist Steve Teagarden were to have returned Friday.

Woods and Communications Assistant Chief Jennifer Swisher plan to go to Louisiana in mid-October.
