HCC names new vice president of academic affairs

October 01, 2005|By Tamela Baker

Hagerstown Community College has named Judith Oleks, former dean of professional studies at Bunker Hill Community College in Boston, as its new vice president of academic affairs, the school announced Friday.

Oleks was chosen from a field of six finalists for the position. A total of 75 applicants from 27 states sought the position, HCC President Guy Altieri said in August.

During an 18-year career at Bunker Hill, Oleks served in several positions, including director of management information systems, acting dean of math/science/technology, department chairman and professor.

Oleks holds a doctorate in higher education administration from the University of Massachusetts, a master's degree in mathematics from the University of Lowell (now the University of Massachusetts at Lowell) and a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Salem (Mass.) State College.

Oleks will assume her duties at HCC on Oct. 24. She replaces Julian Sidlowski, who retired June 30.

Among her responsibilities will be supervision, planning and evaluation of academic programs, as well as faculty evaluation.

"We had a large and strong pool of candidates, and the finalists were especially well-suited for this important leadership position. But in the end, Dr. Oleks emerged as the best fit for what the college needs at this stage of its development," Altieri said in a statement.

Altieri left for a vacation Friday, according to HCC spokeswoman Beth Stull, and could not be reached for further comment.
