Groundbreaking ceremonies for Newgate project set for Monday

September 30, 2005

Groundbreaking ceremonies for the second phase of the Newgate Industrial Park Interceptor Sewer will be Monday at 1 p.m.. on Hopewell Road north of Tractor Supply Company's distribution center.

U.S. Rep. Roscoe Bartlett, R-Md., will be among those attending groundbreaking for the $1.73 million cooperative effort.

When the project is complete, the Washington County sewer system will be connected to the Hagerstown sewer system at the pump station along Western Maryland Parkway, allowing the city to transfer some of the existing sewerage flow to the county's Conococheague Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Gabe's Services Inc. of Frederick, Md., was the low bidder at $1,731,100. The contract is expected to be completed within six months.

Most of the cost is being covered by state and federal sources, with $1.25 million in grants from the Maryland Department of the Environment, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Appalachian Regional Commission and a previous developer contribution.
