Community center in Jefferson Co. faces cost overruns

September 30, 2005

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - The Jefferson County Commission is facing cost overruns for a proposed community center at Sam Michaels Park.

The commission decided to pay up to $2.2 million for the center but learned Thursday it will cost nearly $2.8 million to build.

Part of the cost increase is due to soft ground at the site, Commission member Greg Corliss said. There will be increased costs because of foundation modifications to deal with the ground, Corliss said.

County parks officials said the center is needed because they do not have an indoor facility for their programs.

Sam Michaels Park is off Job Corps Road.
