Guests at the Washington County Free Library's Gala in the Stacks event will be able to travel back in time this weekend, experiencing the origins of one of the country's oldest bookmobiles.

The sixth annual gala fundraiser, with the theme "On the Road," celebrates the 100th anniversary of Washington County's bookmobile. Throughout the South Potomac Avenue library, guests can check out mock book "stops" representing towns that had an established relationship with the traveling book cart.

Details about communities such as Boonsboro, Smithsburg, Williamsport and Keedysville will be on display in addition to photographs and artifacts about the bookmobile's travels.

When the mobile library cart started bringing books to private residences throughout the county in 1905, it was the first bookmobile in the United States, according to information on the Western Maryland's Historical Library Web site at www.whilbr.org. According to accounts by Mary Titcomb, the county library's first librarian, other communities throughout the nation also were experimenting with the concept around the same time.

Saturday's gala event is intended to raise money for the library system's capital campaign. To date, $125,000 has been raised to pay for projects including new libraries in Boonsboro and Smithsburg and renovations at the South Potomac Avenue main branch.

For $100 per ticket, the gala will include catered cuisine, music by the group Just Us, and dancing, door prizes and drawings. Author Roy VanDerLinden will be on hand to sign his book, "The Darking," and there will be a Teddy Roosevelt impersonator, said Pat Wishard, library program coordinator.

New this year will be a Maryland wine tasting, with samples of wines from Maryland Vineyards. Souvenir bookmobile wine glasses will be available for purchase.
