Wheelchair ramp on bus slams into car

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Sara Jackson has been having a rough time recently - she lost one of the two jobs she was working while raising her two young children and putting herself through nursing school.

Tuesday became even worse when a wheelchair ramp on a school bus slammed into the back of her parked car on Second Street in Martinsburg.

The driver of the bus forgot to raise the lift after dropping off children around the corner, Sgt. G.F. Macher of the Martinsburg Police Department said.

Nobody was injured in the accident, which happened about 4 p.m.

"I don't know if it's driveable or not," Jackson said of her car as firefighters with the Martinsburg Fire Department worked to untangle the black metal ramp and Jackson's 1997 Ford Taurus.

Firefighters jacked up the car and used a small saw to cut at least one bar on the ramp. A person then drove the bus backward a few feet, freeing the ramp.

The bus was able to be driven away once the ramp was put back in place, but a tow truck was called for Jackson's car.

Macher said the driver of the school bus had dropped off at least one handicapped child around the corner, but became distracted and forgot to lift the ramp.

Macher said he likely would not issue any citations against the bus driver.

"This is more of a mishap," he said.
