Broadfording Road Bridge to open today

September 27, 2005|by TARA REILLY

A bridge in rural Washington County that has been closed for about two years is expected to open late this afternoon.

Washington County Commissioner John C. Munson said Monday the Broadfording Road Bridge, which runs over Conococheague Creek near Hopps Landing Road, will open after a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 5:30 p.m.

"I'll be glad, for sure," Munson said.

The bridge closed in June 2003 for repairs. It was to be finished later that year, but the county and the original contractor couldn't agree on the cost of additional work needed because of weather-related damage to the bridge.

The Washington County Commissioners terminated that contract in March 2004 and hired Building Systems Inc. of Hagerstown to perform the repairs for $1.4 million, about $707,000 more than what the county originally budgeted.

The bridge temporarily opened in January after Building Systems repaired the structure enough for travel.

County Public Works Director Gary Rohrer said in an e-mail Monday that the bridge and paving are completed, but crews are working on putting in guardrails.
